We work on serious issues, take our mission seriously, but never take ourselves too seriously.

Position Description

Advanced Energy United (United) is currently seeking a Policy Principal to join our Decisionmaker Education and Engagement team (DMEE).

The DMEE team assists state regulators, state energy office officials, and candidates for governor to better understand advanced energy products, services, and business models. Through National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and National Association of State Energy (NASEO) engagement, business roundtables, and educational forums, United educates candidates, commissioners, energy office officials, and staff members about the benefits advanced energy technologies and services can provide to customers and helps to solve the challenges in obtaining these benefits.

Reporting directly to the Western DMEE Policy Director, the Policy Principal will assist with individual commissioner education and ongoing support and be responsible for strategizing, planning and implementing regional and national educational forums for commissioners and commission staff. While focused primarily on Western States and commissions, the Policy Principal will also support United’s national work on the transition to 100% clean energy.

The ideal candidate has exceptional project management, business development, and stakeholder engagement skills. Candidates should also possess an interest in—and working knowledge of—state-level energy policy issues. The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial, comfortable with ambiguity, and flexible. Candidates will need to have the ability to travel to meet with key stakeholders on a regular basis.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Policy Director and DMEE team in educating and supporting commissioners, planning regional and national educational forums, and accelerating the clean energy transition in the built environment
  • Conduct in-depth research on regulatory frameworks, policy proposals, political landscapes, and stakeholders to inform strategic approaches
  • Build and maintain relationships with key decisionmakers and a variety of stakeholders including advocacy groups, industry experts and agency staff
  • Build, organize and manage project management tools and systems
  • Prepare reports and updates on program progress, outcomes, and key metrics for internal and external stakeholders

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; Master’s Degree is a plus
  • 4-6 years of professional experience, with at least some of that experience in policy analysis, policy advocacy, and/or market analysis
  • Experience in the advanced energy industry or clean energy advocacy community is a plus.
  • Independent self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit; candidates must be very comfortable working with colleagues in a remote environment, creating new projects, building their own calendar, and delivering on high expectations
  • Strong interpersonal skills required; candidates must be able to successfully develop and maintain productive relationships with key stakeholders, including policymakers, advocacy groups, industry experts, and regulators
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, required—inclusive of public speaking
  • Entrepreneurial sensibility comfortable with high levels of ambiguity and fluidity
  • Willingness to travel as needed (up to 15%).
