POSITION: Policy Advocate
REPORTS TO: Sr. Attorney, Des Moines
LOCATION: Des Moines. ELPC currently offers a hybrid work schedule.
JOB SUMMARY: The Iowa-based policy advocate plays a key role on initiatives that advance ELPC’s mission through effective advocacy, policy analysis, coalition-building, and communications. Iowa has a particular focus on policies and programs to promote sustainability, combat climate change through clean energy, and protect clean water and other natural resources. The Iowa policy advocate will lead Iowa specific projects and initiatives while collaborating with ELPC colleagues throughout the Midwest.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:[BK1][RK2]
- Advocacy and Lobbying: Engage with policymakers, legislators, and government agencies to promote environmental legislation and regulations that support renewable energy adoption, climate resilience, and water quality improvement
- Public Education and Awareness: Raise awareness among the public about environmental issues facing Iowa, such as the impacts of climate change on agriculture, water resources, and public health. Educate communities about the benefits of clean energy and sustainable practices
- Policy Research and Analysis: Conduct research and analysis on environmental policies, scientific findings, and best practices to inform advocacy efforts and develop evidence-based recommendations for policymakers. Author reports and white papers for policy positions.
- Coalition Building: Build coalitions and partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including businesses, farmers, academia, and non-profit organizations, to advance shared environmental goals and priorities
- Media Engagement: Work with the ELPC Communications Team to amplify environmental issues and advocate for policy solutions through press releases, interviews, op-eds, and social media platforms
- Networking and Collaboration: Participate in local, state, and regional networks of environmental advocates to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and coordinate efforts to address global environmental challenges
- Grassroots Mobilization: Mobilize grassroots support for environmental initiatives through community organizing, volunteer recruitment, and grassroots lobbying to influence decision-making at the local, state, and federal levels
- Development: Assist the ELPC Development Team and network with local and state foundations to support the ELPC Iowa Office. Organize the Iowa Advisory Council meetings twice each year.
Education & Experience (years):
- Strong academic record, excellent oral communication and writing skills, strong analytic abilities and a demonstrated interest in public interest and environmental advocacy
- Minimum 3 years of experience in policy analysis and advocacy; 5 – 8years experience preferred.
- Background in energy, natural resources, climate change, environmental and/or agricultural policy, markets and technologies preferred
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced(law, policy, business or economics) strongly preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Results oriented with ability to focus on and meet deadlines and goals
- Ability to operate independently as well as part of a regional and cross functional team
- Strong oral and written advocacy skills, presentation skills, problem solving skills, and organizing skills
- Quantitative analysis skills are a plus
- Strong project planning skills and a demonstrated ability to undertake complex, long-term projects
Estimated travel & related conditions:
- Approximately 5 – 10%, including occasional travel out of state for conferences, meetings with other ELPC staff and partner organizations; possible in-state travel related to policy advocacy, coalition building and other work dependent on the issue
- Availability for occasional evening or weekend work
Salary
ELPC offers an attractive salary and benefits package, competitive to leading national environmental non-profits. The hiring range for this position based in Des Moines is $72,436 – $85,175.
