Job Summary:

The College of Letters and Science (L&S) is the heart of UW-Madison and home to a tremendous breadth and depth of departments and degree-granting programs in the humanities; natural, physical, and mathematical sciences; social sciences; and the computing, data, and information sciences.

Join L&S for an exciting role as a People and Finance Data & Planning Analyst in support of both Finance and Human Resource functions. Come be part of a team focused on implementing the Administrative Transformation Program (ATP) within L&S. This role is perfect for someone who is detail oriented, is a self-starter, takes initiative on projects, and has a passion for data analysis.

Under the general direction of the Associate Dean for Innovation and Strategic Budgeting, the People and Finance Data & Planning Analyst will work collaboratively with partners across the college and campus to perform the following key responsibilities:

  • Utilize campus finance and HR data from the institutional data warehouse to analyze data, create automated budget adjustment and revenue transfer entries, and verify, track, and distribute funding calculations and arrangements from the central Madison Budget Office
  • Facilitate data generation and tracking for faculty hire process from data entry and analysis of recruitment and retention tool data, database tracking of offer letter faculty splits with import of data for base budget planning and reporting analysis
  • Assist with compiling and analyzing HR data on an ongoing basis, including hire, separation, job change, and compensation data
  • Coordinate with L&S IT team to serve as finance subject matter expert for initial development and continuous enhancement of L&S finance data platform to provide clear, and timely data reporting and data analysis across the College

Responsibilities:

Investigates, researches, gathers, analyzes, and summarizes institutional data in support of information and research needs for planning and policy-making decisions. Provides management information, data analyses, and policy reports to inform strategic planning, decision-making, and resource allocation at the school, college, or divisional level. Provides advice to, and performance management support for a school, college, or division’s leadership.

  • 20% Provides analysis and consultation on a variety of administrative-related matters. Applies subject matter knowledge to support decisions and policymaking through research and fact-finding combined with an understanding of applicable business systems
  • 20% Designs, collects, analyzes, and researches data according to established procedures and regulations
  • 20% Prepares and disseminates statistical reports to institutional programs, working units, and leadership
  • 20% Serves as liaison and contact to school, college, or divisional stakeholders reporting and compliance, external surveys, and statistics and data
  • 20% Participates in establishing guidelines and procedures to ensure adequacy, quality, and reliability of information sources to ensure information systems and databases manage, store, and retrieve data according to established policies, procedures, and reporting regulations

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
  • 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated ability to apply and analyze data to evaluate and inform strategic decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to import, combine, and modify data from multiple data sources
  • Ability to breakdown and explain data results through a variety of presentation methods
  • Proven ability to identify problems, validate findings, and develop innovative solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 years of experience with interactive data visualization tools
  • Ability to obtain and analyze data with automated tools (e.g. Excel, Microsoft Access, PeopleSoft Query, Tableau/other visualization tools)
  • Experience with improving processes, managing change and/or applying systems thinking to work
  • Understanding of data warehouse concepts, data modelling, and database schemas

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $80,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The typical starting salary for this position is $80,000 – $113,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays and paid time off; competitive insurances and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.
