CALIFORNIA CLIMATE ACTION CORPS

Outreach & Engagement Fellow at City and County of San Francisco, SF Environment

Location: San Francisco, California

Number of Positions Available: 4

Time Commitment: September 16, 2024 – August 15, 2025

This is a full-time, 11-month, 1700-hour program from September 16, 2024 – August 15, 2025. Fellows commit to a 40-hour work week, typically Monday – Friday, approximately 8am – 5pm, with occasional evening and weekend commitments based on project needs. 170-340 of these hours are dedicated to professional development. This is a hybrid position, onsite 3 days per week.

**Please note: Due to the full-time commitment of the Program, students enrolled in undergraduate courses between Sep 16, 2024 – Aug 14, 2025 will not be eligible to participate in the California Climate Action Corps Program.

About the California Climate Action Corps Fellowship

The California Climate Action Corps has over 350 positions available across California for the 2024-25 CCAC Fellowship. This is a climate-focused, workforce development program for emerging climate and environmental leaders. These are paid, full-time fellowshipssimilar to internshipsbut with 170-340 dedicated hours for professional development and training while receiving hands-on experience in the climate field.

CCAC Fellows serve as AmeriCorps members and are matched with organizations across California to mobilize communities to take direct climate action and lead projects focused on wildfire resiliency, urban greening, and organic waste diversion and edible food recovery.

Applications are accepted May 1 – August 16, 2024, with priority consideration given to applicants who apply and undergo a CCAC info session before June 21, 2024.

Program Benefits

Fellows will gain knowledge and experience in youth environmental education and engagementincluding teaching pedagogiesclean transportation policy, electric vehicles, and transportation demand management, and have access to networking opportunities with other SF Environment program staff and partners. Other benefits include:

  • Receive up to a $33,600 stipend (pre-tax) spread evenly over 11 months
  • Earn up to $10,000 (pre-tax) education award upon completion of 1700 hours

Description of Duties

The San Francisco Environment Department advances climate protection and enhances quality of life for all San Franciscans. SF Environment is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2040 while advancing racial and social equity, health and resilience, and economic and social justice. We’ve developed and deliver an equity-centered San Francisco Climate Action Plan consisting of world-class policies and strategies developed through cross-agency collaboration and deep community engagement to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions in SF. We measure, monitor, and communicate our progress and best practices and to share with the world what is possible. SF Environment is seeking 4 Outreach & Engagement Fellows to collaborate with different departments in 3 specific focuses areas. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Zero Waste

  • Support edible food rescue programming, outreach, and grant distribution for food recovery organizations and services
  • Promote climate-compost connection outreach at public compost giveaways hosted with San Francisco Unified School District and Parks & Recreation
  • Collaborate with Recology for our Waste Zero Champions program to promote zero waste outreach among residents and businesses through workshops, volunteer opportunities, and direct outreach

Environmental Outreach

  • Collaborate with SF Environment teams to co-develop, pilot, and enhance innovative educational programs for San Franciscos K-12 students
  • Develop and facilitate Youth Climate Action events in San Francisco schools to empower the next generation of environmental leaders

Community Engagement

  • Recruit and manage volunteers to implement urban greening initiatives
  • Assess neighborhood needs for creating, restoring, and stewarding biodiverse nature in communities
  • Conduct community engagement for the landmark tree program
  • Facilitate and implement deep community engagement for Racial Equity Action Plan Phase 2, focusing on San Francisco residents and businesses

Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct community outreach and engagement through promotion at City-sponsored events related to San Franciscos Climate Action Plan and 0-80-100-Roots framework
  • Track program data and analyze results to quantify climate impact

Minimum Program Eligibility Requirements

  • Live in California by August 16, 2024
  • Be at least 18 years of age by September 16, 2024
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be a US Citizen, US National, or lawful US resident to participate

Desired Qualifications/Skills

Experience in Volunteer Engagement, Event Coordination, Community Outreach, Environmental Education, Field Experience, Project Management, Public Speaking/Facilitation, Organic Waste/ Edible Food Recovery, Volunteer Management, Environmental Justice/ Equity, Event Planning, Policy Analysis/ Development, Marketing or Social Media, and Language skills in Spanish and/or Cantonesean asset, but not a requirement. Other valuable contributions include:

  • An interest in climate change mitigation, volunteerism, or public service
  • Experience with outreach, education, training, or community behavior change
  • Fundamental understanding of climate change science, environmental policies in California, and/or environmental priorities
  • Excellent organizational, writing, interpersonal, and speaking skills
