What’s the job?

The Operations Manager oversees all production and maintenance functions to ensure efficient and profitable manufacturing operations for the Ennis Roofing plant. Direct responsibilities include managing both the operations process, embracing design, planning, control, performance improvement, and operations strategy. Will prepare and control departmental budgets, provide leadership in safety, 5S, housekeeping, quality and improving cost reduction. Contributes to the accuracy and effectiveness of the planning and goal setting process by developing, recommending, implementing, and achieving operational plans, goals, budgets, and supports planning for site capital requirements. This position will also help develop floor supervision and provide communication feedback to all levels of the organization. The position will report to and work closely with the Plant Manager in strategic and capacity planning.

  • Reports directly to the Plant Manager and is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Achieve organizational goals, both Pillar and “Must-Win-Battles” through efficient and strategic use of resources and capacities.
  • Oversee the overall operation of the roofing shingle manufacturing line, ensuring efficiency, productivity, and adherence to quality standards.
  • Manage a team of production supervisors, operators, and maintenance staff, providing guidance, coaching, and performance feedback to foster a high-performing collaborative workforce.
  • Develop and implement operational strategies to optimize production schedules, minimize downtime, and meet production, safety, and quality targets.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as production output, equipment uptime, scrap rates, and labor efficiency, and take corrective actions as needed to achieve operational goals.
  • Collaborate with the maintenance department to prioritize and schedule preventive maintenance activities, ensuring equipment reliability and longevity.
  • Work closely with the quality assurance team to uphold product quality standards and implement corrective actions to address quality issues.
  • Work with the Logistics department to manage inventory levels of raw materials, intermediate products, and finished goods to ensure uninterrupted production while minimizing carrying costs and waste.
  • Lead regular meetings with production teams to communicate goals, performance metrics, and operational updates, fostering a culture of accountability and teamwork.
  • Work with the Safety Manager to implement and enforce safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all employees, complying with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Develop and manage operational budgets, monitoring expenses and identifying opportunities for cost savings and efficiency improvements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as engineering, supply chain, and sales to support new product launches, process improvements, and customer requirements.
  • Manage preventative and reactive maintenance to optimize production efficiency while minimizing maintenance costs.
  • Maintains continuous dialogue and communication with the Plant Manager as needed to keep Plant Manager apprised of the status of safety, quality, production, schedules, problems, and opportunities available to maximize efficient operations and to enhance the overall operations of the company manufacturing operations.
  • Maintains open, candid, and continuous communications with personnel from all functions to ensure that essential information is disseminated to insure accomplishment of critical business objectives and customer satisfaction.

What do you bring?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred and/or six to eight (6 – 8) years manufacturing experience in management capacity.
  • Prior first line shop supervisor as well as experience in at least two different manufacturing support functions such as Production, Warehouse Control or Quality Assurance.
  • Strong working knowledge of product structure, manufacturing processes as well as quality standards and modern manufacturing technologies and techniques, TPM. (Autonomous maintenance, professional maintenance, and early equipment management), quality and process control including Statistical Process Control (SPC), 5S, standardized work and other Lean principles.
  • Proficiency in Six Sigma, TPM and Lean Manufacturing concepts.
  • Human Relations Skills Ability to effectively interface with and engage the skills and talents of employees supervised to improve business performance.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent organization and analytical skills.
  • Strong change management skills to include the implementation of Lean Manufacturing principles and concepts.
  • Ability to function, multi-task, and influence others in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Exceptional communication skills (both verbal and written), problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Problem solving and analytical skills to solve practical issues and deal with a variety of changing situations.
  • Training and experience in Lean manufacturing principles and Kaizen facilitation
