Summary

The O&M Technician (Back Plant) is responsible for monitoring, cleaning, operating, and maintaining the ash recycling system, including ash conveying systems and metal recovery equipment. This person will report to the Chief Engineer or Shift Supervisor and will be required to work night shift, alternating weekends and OT as needed. The O&M Technician may support other areas of the plant on occasion to assist with the overall proper operation of the facility. This is a full-time, non-union, non-exempt position located at our Kent County Waste to Energy facility in Grand Rapids, MI.

Responsibilities

  • Checks, verifies, and documents the proper operation of plant machinery and conveyor systems, and report problems to appropriate supervisors on a timely basis (e.g. daily and weekly).
  • Checks and makes necessary adjustments to appropriate equipment to maximize metal recovery and yield according to established operating procedures. (e.g. belt speed, splitter gate position, oil levels, motor belts, chains, tank levels, leaks or spillage of any kind, equipment rotation, sump levels, etc.)
  • Maintains material handling systems including the stocking/load-out of ash bunkers and metals inventory.
  • Performs general housekeeping duties in preparation for other shifts (cleaning, greasing, painting).
  • Enforce safety procedures and environmental policies in the work area, including audits and daily checks.
  • Take immediate action on any safety hazards and report them immediately to the appropriate supervisors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned including preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to read and understand operating manuals.
  • Able to work in varying conditions of heat, dust, noise, smoke and vibrations.
  • Ability to comply with standard operating procedures to reduce the likelihood of injury to employees and damage to plant equipment.
  • Additional duties may be required as needed to support the needs of the facility.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Required 3+ years of relevant experience with HS Diploma or 1+ year of experience with associate degree. Relevant experience includes industrial, power plant or military experience.
  • Waste to Energy or Recycling plant experience preferred.
  • Related military/technical training, and/or previous power or industrial experience preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience with conveyance equipment preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Must submit to a physical and drug screening.
  • Must possess drivers license in good standing to operate mobile equipment, front-end loader, and forklift.
  • Must be fit test qualified for possible full-face respirator use during equipment maintenance outages.
  • Ability to climb ladders and structures and tolerate heights up to and including 50 feet.
  • Ability to lift to 50 pounds as required.
