JOB CLASSIFICATION: Regular, Full-time

REPORTS TO: Assistant Maintenance Supervisor

WORKING HOURS: Monday – Friday

SUPERVISES: None

General Description

This position performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance work under the general supervision of a Maintenance Supervisor to resolve facility operational and/or safety concerns, maintaining all agency facilities in safe and operating condition, and maintaining preventative maintenance programs.

Essential Duties

Performs a variety of facility and equipment repair and maintenance activities at multiple sites within areas of trade expertise (e.g., electrical, heating/air conditioning, carpentry, plumbing, heating, locksmith, roof and rain gutters, concrete, drywall, stucco, painting) for the purpose of ensuring that agency facilities and equipment are maintained in a safe and effective working order in accordance with DHS requirements.

  • Installs a variety of items and/or system components frequently of a complex nature (e.g., cabinetry, doors and hardware, windows, playground equipment, classroom and office equipment and facility components) for the purpose of maintaining facilities in a safe, comfortable, and operating condition.
  • Inspects facilities, systems, and their components for the purpose of ensuring safety and cleanliness and identifying necessary repairs.
  • Troubleshoots minor maintenance problems involving electrical, structural, plumbing, and equipment repair or replacement.
  • Performs preventive building maintenance duties, caulks windows and doors, repairs and replaces broken windows.
  • Performs routine plumbing repairs such as unstopping toilets, sinks or urinals, fixing water leaks, leaking faucets, and water fountains.
  • Performs routine electrical repairs such as changing light bulbs or fluorescent lamps and assists in repairing ballast and light fixtures.
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving safety concerns and taking appropriate actions to maintain educational environment.
  • Maintains tools and/or equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
  • Manicure lawns using an industrial commercial lawnmower & self-propelled lawnmower, edger, weed eater, and blower.
  • Delivers equipment and supplies packed in boxes to all agency facilities.
  • Wears appropriate safety gear, such as safety glasses, shoes, and gloves when tending to lawns or delivering equipment.
  • Coordinates with administration and other trades for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently.
  • Cleans Early Head Start and Head Start centers including sweeping, mopping floors.
  • Stores janitorial supplies and puts garbage cans in proper locations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Maintenance Supervisor, Assistant Maintenance Supervisor, Licensing/Compliance & Facilities Coordinator, the Director of Birth-to-Five Head Start, or Chief Executive Officer.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED, and
  • Two (2) years of experience in a related field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of trades related to building maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of a variety of building maintenance procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge of machinery, equipment, and tools necessary for the maintenance and repair of public buildings.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Skill in reading and following blueprints and assembly instructions.
  • Skills in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with agency staff and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Dresses in appropriate business attire and is professional in appearance and mannerisms.
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam, TB screen, and drug/alcohol screen.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Must be 21 years of age and possess a valid Texas Driver’s License (Op-Class C) and is subject to review and approval by the Agency and insurance company on driver record.
  • Must have transportation and current liability coverage on vehicle to be used in the performance of job duties. Some out-of-town travel may be required.
  • Proof of work eligibility must be provided.
  • Must successfully complete and maintain the following:
  • Adult/Infant/Child CPR and First Aid certification, renewable every 2 years by the expiration date

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Normal physical activity includes sitting, standing, and walking in a usual workday.
  • Requires occasional twisting at desk when answering phone or typing.
  • Requires employee to lift and carry heavy objects such as boxes of paper and supplies; must be able to lift, at minimum, 50 lbs.
  • Requires use of the five senses (hearing, seeing, touching, smelling, and tasting) to perform various job duties and in dealing with staff, clients, and general public.
  • Requires employee to use hands, arms, feet, legs, neck, and head while performing various Agency tasks.
  • Requires occasional bending, stooping, and reaching above shoulder level when operating copier and when retrieving files from file cabinet drawers.
  • Requires constant speaking and hearing on the telephone, with the general public, clients, and staff.
  • ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
  • Involves working indoors and outdoors with exposure to humidity, high/low temperatures, noise/vibrations, and moisture (dew, rain, etc.).
  • Involves working with chemicals/materials that create gases, fumes, odors, mists, and dust and working with tools/equipment that may be hazardous including power tools.
