Job Description

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the worlds leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.

The Facilities Project Manager works with department leaders to plan and execute projects associated with the installation and modification of facilities, equipment, infrastructure and systems in all CFS facilities. Once a project has been defined, they will work with internal resources and external contractors to develop and execute the construction and installation required to complete those projects. Although primarily working within our Devens campus, this role will be called upon to assist with projects across all CFS locations.

This team member will:

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, engineers and the design and construction teams to develop project scope and deliverables
  • Manages all phases of project development for large and/or complex construction and facility improvement projects and equipment installations
  • Participates in the selection of vendors and contractors. Participates in defining the terms of contract agreements and ensures work is completed satisfactorily. Monitors the performance of contracts to ensure compliance with applicable specifications
  • Monitors project budgets to identify potential financial overruns and variances; makes appropriate recommendations to alleviate financial implications
  • Basic knowledge of building codes; ability to inspect and determine the adaptability and cost of renovation of existing structures; knowledge of related state and federal regulations and statutes
  • Work with local Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) to identify permitting requirements
  • Coordinates with internal clients, third parties, IT and facility leaders, and facilitates the decision-making, approval and communication process between department liaisons and end users

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in facilities or project management or similar preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate with extensive experience considered
  • Minimum 5 years Facilities Project Management experience in a fast paced, rapidly changing/growing manufacturing or R&D company
  • Construction management principles
  • Facility planning principles
  • Architectural and engineering principles, practices, and procedures
  • Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, codes, and/or statutes
  • Budgeting principles
  • Contract management principles
  • Advanced project management principles
  • Analyzing problems, identifying alternative solutions, projecting consequences of proposed actions, and making recommendations in support of goals
  • Managing multiple on-going projects
  • Familiar with facilities mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems (MEP) and means and methods required for their installation
  • Demonstrated ability in reading/understanding technical and electrical drawings, manuals, and reports.
  • Proficiency with MS Office products such as Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, and Visio
  • Commitment to safety and quality
  • Ability to take directions from supervisors and work independently
  • Desire to work and contribute in a fast-paced, startup R&D environment with daily changes
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and teamwork skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability and patience to work through projects from start to finish.

Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:

  • Experience with lean manufacturing principles and 5S
  • Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to manage work requests
  • Knowledge of applicable NADA, NFPA, NEC, etc. standards and codes
  • Perform activities such as typing, stooping, climbing, standing, and sitting, for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
