Overview

The Manager – Cost Estimating plays a crucial role in technical projects by managing the estimating function. Their responsibilities include developing standards, procedures, tools, and methodologies to produce cost estimates based on work scope, specifications, and proposal or contract requirements.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in estimating Utility Scale Solar Projects with the ability to work flexibly in a constantly changing environment. Must have the ability to work well on a team, be highly organized and articulate, and can effectively communicate complex topics to non-specialists.

This role reports into the Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) department

Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and manage processes for ensuring all projects have cost estimates linked to the design and scope, with appropriate contingencies related to the maturity of the project.
  • Overall owner of the Cost Estimate product. From estimate creation to approval to project completion. Driving continuous improvement throughout the entire process by analyzing the inputs and outputs against actual costs.
  • Develop and manage the process for providing cost estimates to the organization (tasking, delegation, version control, and workflow)
  • Demonstrate leadership and expertise in EPC processes, with a focus on solar project development. Includes:
  • Comparison of EPC bids to internal cost estimates
  • Leading the review of EPC bids for accuracy against technical specifications.
  • Participation in negotiations with EPCs for market competitiveness.
  • Lead collaboration with other team members to develop a view on forward costs. Analyze and make recommendations on the cost impact of new technology.
  • Understand value engineering concepts and participate in developing their utilization to optimize project costs.
  • Coordinate and conduct site visits with potential EPCs. Travel (5-10 times per year) to visit project sites and other Cypress offices.

Skills And Qualifications

  • 8-10 year’s work experience in estimating, preferably in Utility Scale solar project development, construction, finance, engineering consulting, or relevant experience with an EPC contractor.
  • Change agent … demonstrated leadership and positive outcomes in driving change.
  • Undergraduate degree in Civil / Mechanical / Electrical Engineering / Physics / Construction Management
  • Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications
  • Strong Excel experience including the building of cost estimating tools.
  • Proficient understanding of entire solar project lifecycle and energy storage knowledge a plus.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of team, knowing when to seek help.
  • Flexibility to modify course in real-time in response to fluid facts and circumstances.
  • Proactive and solution-focused communication skills which extend across all organizational and management levels.

Compensation: The salary range for the position is $110,000-$140,000 plus bonus and benefits. Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and location.
