Job Description

The Energy Portfolio Analyst prepares market research and analysis for NYPAs portfolio managers, executive leadership, and customers and supports hedging transactions as an integral member of our Market Analysis, Forecasting, and Hedging team. The Analyst will monitor and interpret regulatory developments impacting the profitability of NYPAs portfolio and cost to its customers. This role will collaborate with portfolio managers, Risk, Finance, and IT in establishing and validating forward price curves, positions, financial results and reporting for energy, capacity, fuel, carbon, and Renewable Energy Credits. The role enables a deep understanding of the inner workings of a complex physical and financial energy portfolio, positioning the candidate for potential future commercial leadership roles in the energy business. Provides comprehensive services that support NYPAs underlying mission of delivering clean, reliable power to its customers. This includes the complete energy value chain of forecasting needs, trading, origination, fuel purchasing and energy management. Includes supporting technical analysis, compliance, and billing and settlement activities. Manages and operates the forecasting function which uses state-of-the-art methodologies for load forecasting challenges. Performs functions and activities related to energy trading and marketing.

Support the functions and activities related to energy trading including but not limited to fuel procurement & logistics, short-term trading, long-term trading, real time trading, bidding, forecasting, marketing and settlements. Analyzes current, historical, and projected volumes to determine trends and market outlook. Performs supply and demand analysis of one or more commodities in support of the trading function. Also manages all Long-Term customer sales, and revenue forecasting for various internal stakeholders throughout the enterprise. #LI-VB1

Responsibilities

  • Monitor & maintain all procedure, manuals, tariffs, market rules and other market items that may impact operations & strategies
  • Track & submit all required testing, regulatory submittals and reporting.
  • Responsible for the review/challenge of all invoicing for billing errors or abnormal reconciliations.
  • Develop & maintain Dashboards, KPIs and other metrics.
  • Assist in preparing and presenting analysis of market anomalies that can and have had impact to ERM.
  • Responsible for composing analysis of market indicators, trends, quarterly fundamental and market outlook reports.
  • Conduct analyses for NYPA’s generation, load, and revenue forecasts. This includes weather normalization/load growth studies, and provide supporting variance analysis, monthly balancing summaries, regression analysis, R-Squared analysis, T-Stat analysis, and Standard Error Analysis.
  • Develop response & supporting analytics for all internal/external stakeholder’s inquiries relative to Market transaction & forecasting related matters; this includes, Accounting, Financial Planning, Enterprise Risk, Demand Response, Pricing, NYISO, FERC, NERC, NPCC, IOUs, etc
  • Stay current with NYISO procedures, market issues and reports.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Familiar with Wholesale Electricity Market, Fuel Markets and/or associated Financial products.
  • Basic business, statistical, financial and reasoning skills
  • Strong analytical and research abilities
  • General knowledge of accounting practices
  • Basic understanding of the economic impact of decisions within the positions scope of authority.
  • Ability to prioritize work, multi-task, and self-start.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders both inside and outside the organization.
  • Strong computer software and database skills.
  • Basic knowledge in Tableau, Power BI or similar data analytics database is preferred.
  • Preferred experience in database programming and querying using SQL, MS Access, VBA, SAS, Oracle or other.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Analytics, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics or related discipline required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience in an analytical role or equivalent combinations of education & experience.
  • Utility or Energy Company experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is: $87,900.00 – $120,860.00. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
