Lawrence Berkeley National Labs (LBNL) Building Technology and Urban Systems Division has an opening for an Energy/Environmental Technology Researcher to join the team.
The Building and Industrial Applications (BIA) Department collaborates with governments, utilities and industry to encourage more efficient use of energy and other resources towards a decarbonized industrial sector. We accomplish this by developing energy, demand management and GHG reduction practices, standards, policies, analysis and technologies. We perform our work in the U.S. and throughout the world.
In this role you will support the efforts to evaluate the performance of emerging technologies in real-world industrial settings that claim to reduce carbon, energy, and/or water in the industrial sector. This includes developing profession, high quality technical reports and preparing presentations summarizing results from evaluations to quantify performance improvements from the proposed technologies.
What You Will Do:
- Supports evaluation of projects installing emerging technologies in real-world industrial settings that claim to reduce carbon, energy, and/or water in the industrial sector.
- Develop M&V plans to evaluate the new and emerging technologies documenting ways to characterize the baseline and post retrofit performance including developing scopes and schedules
- Conduct and support plant site visits to execute an M&V plan including collecting data from existing data acquisition systems, setup field monitoring equipment / data loggers, completing functional performance tests, and discussing project implementation with the site and technology vendor.
- Conduct energy modeling, economic analysis, and/or simulation to quantify impacts of emerging technologies (using spreadsheets and/or energy modeling software) based on the M&V plans
- Writes technical reports and prepare presentations summarizing results from evaluations to quantify performance improvements from the proposed technologies
- Provides professional, high-quality deliverables that demonstrate technical excellence, objectivity, and clarity within a given project budget and schedules.
- Must be able and willing to travel up to 20%.
What is Required:
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required, in Mechanical, Industrial, or related engineering field of study.
- 2 years of engineering experience or similar related to the energy projects in the commercial and/or industrial sector (assessing, implementing or evaluating).
- Knowledge about data instrumentation and acquisition systems.
- Strong background in data – collection, quality control and analysis.
- Knowledge of the industrial sectors (e.g., paper pulp, steel, cement) and their end use equipment and their energy usage patterns and efficiencies.
- Knowledgeable and skilled engineer with background in energy, water efficiency and decarbonization in the industrial sector.
- Strong quantitative and technical skills to organize and conduct technical analysis.
- Strong background in using Excel, Python, Matlab or other tools to conduct data analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver high quality results on time and within budget.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn and adapt as needed.
Desired Qualifications:
- An understanding of energy savings opportunities and technologies for industrial systems (process heating and cooling, HVAC, compressed air, refrigeration, etc.).
- Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) Accreditation or Performance Measurement and Verification Expert (PMVE) Accreditation or ability to obtain.
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM) Accreditation.
