Job Description

The Building Technology & Urban Systems Division (BTUS) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is at the forefront of cutting-edge research on industrial and building decarbonization technologies. For decades, we have been leaders in developing energy-efficient windows, improving the nation’s electricity grid, and exploring innovative technologies and solutions that increase energy efficiency of industrial and commercial buildings.
The Building & Industrial Applications Department within BTUS works with organizations to drive the uptake of innovative solutions to energy and environmental problems. Were committed to conducting research that supports the adoption of technologies that reduce the environmental footprint of an organizations operations.
In this exciting roll, you will provide resolutions to complex problems related to the deployment of industrial decarbonization and energy efficiency solutions and strategies. You will identify and lead activities such as developing software tools, guidance documents, and other technical communications to drive adoption of industrial decarbonization and conducting techno-economic analysis/research that identifies solutions for breaking down barriers to implementing/deploying industrial decarbonization strategies. You will also work with team leadership to identify, develop, and potentially pursue new areas of growth in industrial decarbonization. In some cases, you may be interacting directly with program funders and/or lab leadership to secure funds and execute tasks related to these new growth areas. When and where applicable, you will seek and identify opportunities to disseminate work outputs in public forums (e.g., conferences, webinars, journal articles, trade publications, lab reports, etc.).
You will be required to oversee the completion of deliverables. This includes ensuring projects are completed within scope and budget, ensuring technical accuracy and rigor of deliverables, supervising the work of other staff on the project, communicating progress to funders, and communicating outputs to relevant stakeholders both internal and external to the lab. In due time, the employee will also be expected to grow the scope of the teams work, including securing funding for new areas within the industrial sustainability space.
What You Will Do:
  • Working collaboratively with others at LBNL, other national labs, and/or university partners, identify technical assistance needs to support federal and/or state programs for industrial decarbonization and energy efficiency.
  • As part of a team, conceptualize and develop research methods to investigate identified problems.
  • Serve as the technical lead in the development of tools, technical guidance, or research on industrial energy and/or carbon reductions.
  • Oversee the work of other staff; some staff may be external to LBNL.
  • Manage the successful delivery of projects.
  • Communicate progress results both internally and externally through multiple formats (e.g., written, verbal) to broad set of stakeholders, including funding agencies, manufacturers, and lab leadership.
  • Expand teams work in industrial decarbonization and energy efficiency.
  • Provides professional, high-quality deliverables that demonstrate technical excellence, objectivity, and clarity within a given project budget and schedules.
  • Must be able and willing to travel up to 15%.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
  • Working collaboratively with others at LBNL, at other national labs, and/or university partners, identify technical assistance needs to support federal programs for industrial water efficiency.
  • Serve as the technical lead in the development of tools, technical guidance, or research on industrial water topics.
  • May translate work on industrial decarbonization deployment into archived literature (e.g., journals).
  • May supervise the activities of exempt and nonexempt personnel.
  • Upon Area approval and completion of required training, may obtain full PI status.
What is Required:
  • A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or related engineering or applied science field of study and 8 years of relevant work experience OR; a Masters degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or related engineering or applied science field of study and 6 years of relevant work experience OR; a PhD degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or related engineering or applied science field of study and 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Knowledgeable and skilled engineer with background in energy and decarbonization in the industrial sector.
  • Possess deep expertise in manufacturing energy efficiency and decarbonization.
  • Demonstrated history of leading project deliverables to completion.
  • Understand energy economics and techno-economic analysis of industrial energy consuming systems.
  • Knowledge of the industrial ecosystem and stakeholders within the US (e.g., federal and state governments, NGOs, academic/research institutes).
  • Strong quantitative and technical skills to organize and conduct technical analysis.
  • Background in using Excel, Python or other tools to conduct data analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high quality results on time and within budget.
  • Ability to communicate research findings, both in writing and orally, to the broadest of stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of general manufacturing sustainability and business environments.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience with using energy-related software tools, datasets and/or databases, for the industrial sector.
  • Experience working on research in the public interest.
  • Successfully prepared and published work outputs in academic journals.
  • An understanding of energy savings opportunities and technologies for industrial systems (process heating and cooling, HVAC, compressed air, refrigeration, etc.).
  • Familiarity with life cycle assessments.
  • Experience working for public entities.

Notes:
  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • The full salary range for this position is $119,184.00 – $201,120.00. The budgeted salary range that the Lab reasonably expects to pay for this position is $141,531.00 – $156,429.00. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidates qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, and certifications, and also aligned with the internal peer group.

  • This position is eligible for a flexible work mode, with onsite or hybrid work being the preferred modes. Hybrid work is a combination of teleworking and performing work on-site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab. Work schedules are dependent on business needs.
