Position Title: Director, Asset Management – Thermal (Gas)

Reports To: Vice President, Asset Management

Direct Reports: Yes / Functional Unit: Asset Management & Operations

FLSA Status: Exempt Position Type: Full-Time

Location: Charlotte / Denver / Remote

THE CHALLENGE

Responsible for the success of assigned thermal power projects, the Director will be the owner of asset plans that optimize asset value that will span the range of commercial, engineering and operating solutions. The Director will oversee various projects as either the project owner or project manager. The Director will also be active in the routine business management of assigned power plants, including budgeting, monthly variance analysis and interfacing with markets, and will also have responsibility to direct and coach less experienced asset managers to be future leaders at Onward. The Director will be responsible for, and may delegate and oversee, compliance with offtakes, certain debt agreement covenants and various regulatory requirements. Reports to the Vice President, Asset Management and Commercial Operations.

  • Optimize the value of thermal power projects
    • The Director will develop and own asset plans for assigned projects that identify opportunities for asset optimization, determine how to address downside risks, and include project management schedules for plan execution.
    • The Director will be responsible for delivering reports and updates on the status of asset plans to senior management.
    • Be a thought leader and strategy formulator for regulatory or legislative solutions as part of existing power project recontacting or recommercialization in coordination with trade groups and both in-house and outside counsel.
    • Maintain relationships with commercial counterparties to protect investors interests in assets, quickly and efficiently resolving differences or disputes as they may arise.
    • Coordinate with third-party marketers and organized markets/ISOs for periods of merchant operations, including formulation of energy bids and capacity pricing strategies.
    • Assist in the diligence, acquisition and integration of new investments that the company makes.
  • Support financial management of power projects
    • Lead relationships with insurance broker on assigned assets, and take ownership of insurance claims for assigned assets.
    • Coordinate development of annual plant budgets.
    • Participate in monthly variance analysis and performance reporting.
    • Interface with debt holders and investment partners.
  • Support operations and administration of assigned projects
    • Support regulatory reporting and compliance efforts, as needed.
    • Assist with operations and continual improvement efforts that result in either one-time or recurring positive cash flow through coordination with Plant Managers and plant personnel.
    • Develop cost/benefit analyses for plant capital and facility proposals for improved efficiencies. Participate in the implementation of the plan.
    • Assist with engineering improvement projects that either improve plant efficiency/longevity or resolve technical plant dilemmas.
    • Identify development and expansion opportunities at existing projects.

THE PROFILE TO SUCCEED

Degree in business, engineering or related discipline preferred, and 15+ years of experience with natural gas-fired power generation assets. Experience leading projects and responsibility for plant financial performance. Additional experience with renewable generation and battery storage is a plus. Experience with a variety of US electricity markets, including Midwest ISO, is required. Experience with financial tools and principles such as financial models, cost/benefit analysis, accounting standards and budgeting are required.

  • Solid understanding of fundamental power plant concepts and operations.
    • Deep experience with various commercial structures including power purchase agreements, tolls, various hedging structures and long/open merchant positions.
    • Familiarity with project finance and capital structures with multiple underlying project financings.
    • Experience building various spreadsheet-based models for engineering, operating, financing or M&A purposes.
  • Ability to lead projects, direct other asset managers work, and drive results for assigned power generation projects.
  • Ability to think critically, analyze complex problems with no clear solutions, exercise good judgment, defend conclusions before senior management and make sound decisions.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with attention to detail, accuracy and timeliness.
  • Ability to interact and communicate well with individuals in all areas of the Company and outside vendors.
  • Maintain the highest standards of conduct and integrity in all dealings inside and outside the organization.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of Excel, Word, Power Point and various other business applications.
  • Ability to travel up to 25%.
