DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

At the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS), the search for solutions to some of the most pressing global policy challenges of our time starts right here – from climate change to food security, democracy, migration, human rights, security and much more. At GPS, students learn from world-class professors while surrounded by a diverse body of students from all walks of life, creating a global, holistic classroom experience in our degree programs. GPS instructs a diverse student body of domestic and international students in the MPP, MCEPA, MIA, and MAS-IA degree programs, a joint Ph.D. with the Department of Political Science and executive education programs. GPS also administers the International Studies Program, offering a rigorous curriculum for students interested in international affairs with nine B.A. degree options, three combined BA/MIA and BA/MPP programs, and a minor program. GPS is also the parent organization to major research centers: 21st Century China Center, 21st Century India Center, Big Pixel Initiative, Center for Commerce and Diplomacy, Cowhey Center on Global Transformation, Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, Fudan-UC Center on Contemporary China, Japan Forum for Innovation and Technology, Korea-Pacific Program, Policy Design and Evaluation Lab, SDG Policy Initiative, Wavemaker Lab, and the campus-wide Deep Decarbonization Initiative and the UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

This position will play a key role in developing and executing a comprehensive digital marketing and social media strategy that advances the schools reputation, engagement and targeted growth in support of our mission, vision and strategy. The GPS Digital and Social Media Strategist is responsible for developing, implementing and managing the overall digital marketing strategy. This includes digital content such as blogs and landing pages, social media, graphics, images, audio, videos and online paid advertising. Collaborates among multiple teams to ensure consistency through all digital marketing channels and proactively leverages innovative online techniques and programs to ensure the institution is maximizing its online presence in support of strategic initiatives. Creates and implements a comprehensive strategy across social media channels (Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube) to promote, protect, and strengthen the GPS/UC San Diego brand and the prestige and distinction it carries while fostering lifelong relationships with local, regional, national and international audiences (prospective and current students, alumni, faculty, staff, stakeholders and friends). The incumbent is also a collaborator in managing GPSs overall multimedia projects, with a priority on creating and editing video-related content. Creates project milestones and analyzes engagement data to ensure the schools success.

The strategist is an experienced specialist when it comes to the latest social platforms, tools and technologies. The position drives school-wide social media efforts, stays on the leading edge of trends and technologies and advocates for new approaches that advance the school and its goals. The strategist is an experienced project manager and effective communicator, leading and actively contributing to multidisciplinary project teams, work groups and committees. Strong analytical skills are required to develop reports and dashboards using Google Analytics and other tools as needed, as well as being well-versed in content management system websites.

  • Available to work evenings/weekends during peak periods; some domestic travel may be expected.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience creating content for both wide and segmented audiences that inspires action. Keen knowledge of digital media trends and best practices. Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of design and user experience, including skill to design in an appealing, lively and relevant way. Thorough expertise and proficiency in digital media content creation and administration.

  • Demonstrated experience assessing digital media performance. Ability to draw insight from data and communicate recommendations to management. Thorough skills to create clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional web sites that provide web content consistent with the organization’s message and in keeping with management directives and client objectives.

  • Demonstrated skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long- and short-term strategic communications plans. Thorough knowledge of content management systems and / or relevant web applications used for web production and organization-specific computer application programs.

  • Thorough understanding of technical language and requirements of the assigned work. Knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation.

  • Thorough understanding of organization’s processes, procedures, and applicable rules and regulations for web communications. Thorough understanding of technical language and requirements of the assigned work. Knowledge of effective storytelling principles and ability to write succinct, evocative and engaging digital and social media posts.

  • Experience with Google and Microsoft suites, Adobe Creative Suite, Hootsuite and other business and digital media tools. Thorough technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and / or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities. Thorough knowledge of content management systems and / or relevant web applications used for web production and organization-specific computer application programs.

  • Thorough interpersonal communication skills. Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of design and user experience, including skill to design in an appealing, lively and relevant way.

  • Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems.

  • Proven ability to work both independently and as a team member. Ability to coordinate multiple assignments, prioritize work, function effectively under deadline pressure, and fulfill assignments on schedule. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

PREFERRED:

  • Degree in communications, computer science, international relations, public policy or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Extensive skills in audience targeting and paid promotion of digital media posts.

  • Experience in photo, graphic, and video production and publishing.

  • Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems. Thorough skills to create clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional web sites that provide web content consistent with the organization’s message and in keeping with management directives and client objectives.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $77,000 – $139,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $36.88 – $66.67

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
