Department Introduction:
Stanford Energy Systems Innovations (SESI) powers the university with innovative solutions that result in the most sustainable and efficient use of resources.
SESI encompasses the best of both North American and European district heating and cooling system advancements, with engineers, manufacturers, and constructors from both continents collaborating to develop this state-of-the-art transformation of Stanford into one of the most efficient district energy systems in the world. Aside from extremely efficient operations, sustainability features are incorporated throughout the Central Energy Facility (CEF) so that it can serve as an example for generations to come.
Situated on 8,180 acres, Stanford University requires a significant amount of energy to support its academic mission and the research functions housed within more than 1,000 campus buildings. Efficiently managing energy supply and demand, as well as the corresponding greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, is critical to the universitys future.

Job Purpose:
The Energy Operations Data Analyst performs technical work to support a wide array of critical business functions for the Energy Operations organization at Stanford University. The Data Analyst provides support for metering validation, tracking and reporting processes for campus utility consumption, including new meter status tracking and existing meter billing processes, to ensure utility consumption is accurately tracked and revenue is collected. The Data Analyst oversees utility invoice receipt and validation, and coordinates with administrative staff to ensure prompt invoice payment. The Data Analyst also works with the Staff Data Scientist and Energy Engineer to develop and enhance business processes. The Data Analyst reports to the Associate Director of Engineering.

Core Duties*:

    • 40% – Performs technical work to support the Energy Operations utility metering needs. The data analyst works with other staff members to ensure meter changes (new, change, removal) are tracked and properly implemented. Uses business software systems and data historians to identify metering problems, and coordinates with engineering and maintenance staff to assign appropriate personnel to resolve problems. Coordinates project meetings with groups throughout Stanford University to ensure metering needs are identified, variances are promptly addressed, and billing and revenue collection processes are effectively executed.
    • 20% – Oversees utility invoice receipt and validation, including data collection and analysis from disparate sources to ensure invoices are accurate. Works with other Energy Operations staff members to resolve invoice questions or discrepancies when they occur, and coordinates with administrative staff to ensure prompt payment of invoices.
    • 20% – Works with staff Data Scientist and Energy Engineer to ensure business process development and enhancements are defined and effectively implemented. Uses business software tools, enterprise data historian, and data visualization platforms to analyze data to identify areas of focus for development and enhancement, and to measure effectiveness of changes.
    • 20% – Provides technical support for internal and external reporting. Perform analyses of meter database information, equipment operational data, consumption patterns, and other performance indicators to develop and deliver effective reports to internal and external stakeholders. Provides document control support for Energy Operations.

Education & Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics, or engineering.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Minimum

    • In-depth knowledge and experience using and applying analytical software, database management system software, database reporting software, database user interface and query software, and data mining software.
    • Demonstrated ability to collect data using a variety of methods, such as data mining and hardcopy or electronic documentation study, to improve or expand databases.
    • Intermediate statistical ability.
    • Strong listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple activities in a deadline-oriented environment; highly organized, flexible, and rigorous attention to detail.
    • Ability to use logic to calculate data; efficiently construct a database or scrutinize the form of a question.
    • Ability to work with data of varying levels of quality and validity.
    • Demonstrated ability to produce data in a clear and understandable manner meeting user requirements.
    • Ability to work effectively with multiple internal and external customers and stakeholders.
    • Ability to take a leadership role on projects with users, clients, and other stakeholders.

Preferred

    • Proficient with business software applications such as EBS, eAM, eDNA, and PI.
    • Experience with computer maintenance management software (CMMS).
    • Experience in document control, technical writing, or related work.
    • Experience in utilities, district energy, renewables, power generation, or related field.
    • Awareness of environmental and safety rules, regulations, and policies associated with power generation or other industrial facilities.

Physical Requirements*:

    • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
    • Frequently sit, sort, file paperwork or parts, grasp lightly, and use fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh 10 pounds or less.
    • Occasionally write by hand, twist, bend, stoop and squat.
    • Rarely stand, walk, reach, or work above shoulders and use a telephone.

Working Conditions:

    • May work extended hours during peak business cycles.
    • Requires 24-hour response availability seven days per week for emergency situations.
    • Power Plant conditions require wearing of Personal Protective Equipment, including hearing protection with normal plant noise > 80dB TWA.
    • May work at heights 4 10 ft.

The expected pay range for this position is $92,000 to $126,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
