Job Description Summary: Green Plains is growing their Commercial Team which requires additional analytical support. As part of the Commercial Team, the Commodity Analyst will support the team’s efforts across all categories including fundamental and financial analysis, trade support, marketing/procurement strategy, financial modeling, and overall risk management. The Commodity Analyst will work cross functionally with a variety of departments including Logistics, Accounting, Risk, Credit, and Senior Management. The successful candidate will report directly to a product lead, such as the Director of Ethanol Marketing, Director of Corn Procurement, or similar.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Commercial Team through fundamental and financial analysis, financial modeling, and analysis of risk management strategies
  • Conduct research on various commodities, including gathering data on supply and demand dynamics, geopolitical events, weather patterns, and economic indicators that impact commodity prices
  • Analyze historical and real-time data to identify trends, correlations, and anomalies, and generate reports and insights for the commercial trading team
  • Maintain and develop supply and demand forecasts, trends and market-related opinions
  • Prepare and present clear and concise reports and summaries of market analysis findings to the team, including recommendations for trading strategies and risk management opportunities
  • Interact directly with customers/suppliers in trade support and marketing/procurement roles
  • Manage market risk with specific customers, vendors or suppliers
  • Monitor and analyze risk positions, both physical and financial, identifying opportunities to maximize profit and minimize loss
  • Generate profit and loss estimates for a variety of physical and financial trading positions and trade portfolios
  • Execute financial hedges, communicating with outside brokers and internal stakeholders to limit company exposure
  • Understand the competitive and evolving biofuel market landscape and how potential changes may impact the organization, including but not limited to changes in laws and regulations
  • Collaborate with other departments, including accounting, FP&A, risk, and logistics, to stay updated on market developments and understand their implications for trading strategies
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines and company policies in all activities
  • Perform additional responsibilities as needed and required, the above is not comprehensive of all potential responsibilities

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, or a related field
  • 0 to 3+ years in a commodity analysis/trading/trading support role or similar work experience
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and software (e.g., Excel, statistical software, data visualization tools)
  • Proven analytical, quantitative and modeling skills with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Basic programming knowledge (SQL, VBA, Python, etc.) is a plus, but not a requirement
  • A strong interest in commodities markets and a desire to learn and adapt in a dynamic trading environment
  • Ability to work effectively in a team, meet deadlines, and handle high-pressure situations
  • A proactive and results-driven approach to work

  • Ability to meet physical demands of the job includes but is not limited to: frequent sitting, frequent computer uses, and frequent telephone use
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel
