Massachusetts, USA

We are partnered with an innovator in the electro-chemical energy storage industry, focusing on transforming the manufacturing processes & performance of Li-ion batteries for EVs, grid storage, consumer electronics, and more.

They are seeking a talented Battery Engineer with expertise in pouch cell fabrication to join their dedicated team.

The ideal candidate will have experience setting up semi-automatic pouch cell assembly processing lines, establishing pouch cell build processes and have led cell build process improvement to drive quality.

Responsibilities:

1. Pouch Cell Design and Optimization: Lead the design and optimization of pouch cell configurations to meet performance, safety, and cost targets. Utilize your expertise in cell design principles, electrode formulation, and electrolyte selection to develop high-performance pouch cells.

2. Manufacturing Process Development: Develop and optimize pouch cell manufacturing processes, including electrode coating, cell assembly, and sealing. Implement best practices for quality control, yield improvement, and cost reduction.

3. Materials Selection and Evaluation: Evaluate and qualify materials for pouch cell components, including electrodes, separators, and electrolytes. Work closely with suppliers to ensure material quality and consistency.

4. Equipment Selection and Integration: Identify and specify equipment for pouch cell fabrication. Collaborate with equipment vendors to customize and integrate systems into the manufacturing process.

5. Process Characterization and Validation: Develop test protocols and procedures for characterizing pouch cell performance and reliability. Conduct experiments, analyze data, and validate manufacturing processes to ensure consistent cell performance.

6. Safety and Compliance: Ensure that pouch cell manufacturing processes comply with relevant safety standards and regulations. Implement safety protocols and procedures to mitigate risks associated with battery fabrication.

7. Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and product managers, to integrate pouch cells into end products. Communicate effectively with stakeholders to align on project goals and timelines.

8. Continuous Improvement: Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the performance, reliability, and manufacturability of pouch cells. Identify opportunities for process optimization, automation, and cost reduction.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in battery engineering, with a focus on pouch cell fabrication.
  • Deep understanding of pouch cell design principles, electrode formulations, and manufacturing processes.
  • Previous experience setting up semi-automatic pouch cell assembly processing lines.
  • Strong background in improving cell build processes improvement to drive quality.
  • Experience with electrode coating techniques, cell assembly methods, and sealing technologies.
  • Familiarity with processes, equipment and instrumentation used in battery fabrication, such as coating machines, laminators, and vacuum chambers.
  • Strong knowledge of battery materials, including electrode materials, separators, and electrolytes.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and statistical tools for process characterization and validation.

After completing a recent funding round, they are expanding their operations across the board. Joining now at the start of a period of huge growth, means you will have scope to get involved with a wide variety of projects across the organization and be first in line for future career opportunities.
